HOW DOES GOD SPEAK TO US? BY JOE UZAR, OUR SEMINARIAN
Wouldn’t it be nice if our God in Heaven would drop a line every now and then, or send us a text message with an answer to one of our deepest questions? That might be wishful thinking, but in reality, our Lord does desire to communicate His will and love for us in real and tangible ways. The prophet Jeremiah shared the words of the Lord saying, “Call to Me, and I will answer you; I will tell you great things beyond the reach of your knowledge” (33:3). But how will the Lord tell us these great things? So often in prayer, we are tempted to listen to only one voice, our own. We pray for others and for our own needs, but how often do we take the opportunity to truly listen to Him? Anticipating this, our Lord made His Word incarnate in the person of Jesus Christ. We desire true knowledge and it was Christ Himself who said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). Turn to Christ and ask for the grace to listen with an open mind and heart. The Word of God is spoken in many ways: through the Scriptures, our liturgical worship, in nature, in our relationships, and even in our struggles. It is up to us to listen and find God’s voice through the noise of our daily lives. How do wo do this? Listen to Christ who said, “But when you pray, go to your inner room, close the door, and pray to your Father in secret” (Matt. 6:6}. Go to that quiet place in your heart, where there are no distractions, and listen. Pray to Christ to open your ears to the Father’s voice and then we can begin to understand what our Lord wills for each one of us.
